GearBox North has been operational for just eighteen months, but has proven such a hit with the local broadcast and post-production creative community that plans for expansion are already underway.
The success of GearBox North is best illustrated through the stellar list of clients it has gained since opening. The operation has already secured the business of a number of the North’s most-respected post houses including: 422, Bigger Pictures, Editz, Granada TV, Hammerhead TV, Lion Eyes Television, Picture Canning, Serious Facilities, Sumners, Video Source, VTR North and the Zoo Digital Group.
GearBox North is both a hire and sales office, and delivers the same level of excellent customer service and on-demand 24/7 technical support that the company offers in the South. The operation covers the whole of the North of England, including Scotland, but concentrates on two main broadcast production areas – Manchester and Leeds.
Richard Eastwood, GearBox’ Managing Director, commented “We have seen a significant growth in business in the North in the last three years, and it became obvious to us that to meet this growing demand a dedicated, local office was the only way we could offer the same level of service that we do with our other outlets.”
“Danny Simmonds, our Operations Manager, and I visited several of our clients in the North in 2005, and asked them how they would respond to us opening a local office and they were extremely open and enthusiastic to the idea, they also promised that we would be their ‘first call’ if we opened the office, which I’m pleased to say has proved to be the case.”
GearBox North is located within the VTR North Post-Production facility in Leeds; the operation is modelled on the increasingly successful GearBox Express office the company runs from Goldcrest Post Production in Soho.
Richard said, "We are very pleased to have been able to base our North of England office within the VTR Group facility in Leeds, we having been doing business with the team there for quite some time. They are in our view a very friendly, dynamic, creative bunch of people, and their facility is absolutely first class. We couldn't have wished for a better home for our North operation."
GearBox North is managed by Dave Mace, originally from Leeds. Dave was headhunted from The Hospital in Covent Garden where he specialised in installing and supporting the facility’s high-definition equipment.
Danny Simmonds explains why GearBox chose Dave: “We dealt with Dave when he was at The Hospital, and we were very impressed by his technical knowledge, and his enthusiasm. Once we decided to open the office in the North, Dave was the first person that sprang to mind for someone to manage the operation. Dave’s time at The Hospital means he’s uniquely qualified in the area of HD production, and we are always conscious of the fact our staff need a ‘real life’ understanding of what makes a modern facility function.”
Danny adds, “Plus the fact he was originally a local lad, and knew the geography was another major bonus in appointing him to the position – we are very pleased to have him on-board, and have every confidence in Dave making an excellent job of helping us further develop our business in the North”.
