Journey To Cold Mountain

Greeted with critical acclaim and box-office success, Cold Mountain is a compelling film that stars Jude Law and Nicole Kidman as lovers parted and reunited during the American Civil War. Directed by Anthony Minghella, the film is an epic adaptation of Charles Frazier's best-selling first novel.

It is in this illustrious company that the GearBox appears – literally. GearBox Sound & Vision is given a credit at the end of the film as a result of supplying multiple Apple Power Mac based Pro Tools|HD systems and other equipment including Professional VTRs, a G5/FCP4 Editing System, Storage and Plasma Screens to the sound and picture editing teams.

"In choosing to edit an $80 million picture on Final Cut Pro, Walter Murch has proven conclusively that Apple's editing software and OS X operating system is at the forefront of digital cinema technology," commented GearBox managing director Richard Eastwood. "It was a privilege for us to work with professionals of the calibre of Anthony Minghella, Walter Murch and Eddy Joseph. The whole GearBox team are very proud of this credit."

Such was Walter Murch's confidence in the Final Cut Pro systems that he took them to work in rural Romania, where the film was shot in order to capture the look and feel of 19th-century North Carolina.

There is a documentary due for release – Journey to Cold Mountain – that covers the making of the film. This too used an Apple Power Mac G5/FCP4 system for editing and again, this was supplied by GearBox.

Until then, it is possible to find out more about the making of the film from GearBox. Sound supervisor Eddy Joseph, re-recording mixer Mike Prestwood-Smith and first assistant editor Sean Cullen have all helped GearBox to document the many outstanding aspects of the way Cold Mountain was created.

With Cold Mountain already nominated for a number of major awards, including best motion picture by both BAFTA and the Golden Globes, the techniques and technologies that went into the making of the film will undoubtedly be copied elsewhere.
