The Chemical Brothers - Push the Button on AWS900 | |
|
Highly respected recording artists, and pioneers of the ‘Big Beat’ sound The Chemical Brothers have chosen to upgrade to the Solid State Logic AWS900 analogue workstation for their private studio in Sussex. Designed by Recording Architecture, the studio features, a generous stock of outboard equipment and the Brothers’ collection of vintage synthesizers, which includes an EMS VCS3, ARP 2600, Oberheim expanders and a Roland JP6. The AWS900 is proving to be a big hit with Tom Rowlands (who along with Ed Simons makes up The Chemical Brothers) and their engineer Steve Dubbs. “We are really enjoying using the AWS900,” says Tom. “It's a great desk because it gives us all the features of a high end console at a reasonable price. Also, importantly for us, it has a small footprint. It’s perfect for musicians and producers who want to get a high-end sound in a private studio. We love the EQ, pre’s and dynamics and think the whole feel of the faders and pots are great.”

Various console options were considered before Rowlands decided on the AWS900 - “We were keen to upgrade our old console, but with virtually all the desks we considered the limiting factor was the need to install a separate machine room and air conditioning.” Rowlands adds: “The AWS900 has proved to be the perfect desk for us because there are no special power or AC requirements. The size is perfect for the space we have and the fantastic sound is what we are used to from using SSL’s other desks and outboard equipment."
The AWS900 provides the dual benefits of a fully featured SuperAnalogue signal path coupled with a comprehensive DAW controller. Key features include SSL’s legendary SuperAnalogue mic pre’s and signal processing; full monitoring up to 5.1-channel surround sound; direct control of DAW recording, editing and mixing functions; and flexible signal routing. Additional features include greater bandwidth than 192kHz recorders; twin curve SSL E and G Series 4-band parametric equalization; assignable SSL dynamics section with gate, expander and compressor/limiter; G Series Stereo main mix buss compressor; flexible processing order; balanced circuitry throughout; oxygen-free cable throughout; and metering on all channels and main output.
